Conditions & Treatments

Consultations

Consultations are available at any of our clinics. It is useful to speak to our Practice Manager who can advise on the best facility for you and what to expect at your consultation.  Usually, treatments such as laser or intravitreal injection can be carried out at your consultation. Your eyes will usually be dilated at your first visit so you may wish to arrange a lift.  Please bring any spectacles with you.  You may wear your contact lenses but be aware you may need to remove these.

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your consultation, to allow time to check in and complete registration documents. This will ensure that your consultation time will not be cut short.

Feel free to download and complete our registration document and health questionnaire if you wish to save time at your visit. We ask that these are completed by all new patients.

Cataract Surgery/Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Simon has wide experience in cataract surgery / refractive lens exchange and offers a choice of the most up-to-date lenses available. Multifocal lenses, for example, which serve both near and distance vision are unavailable on the NHS, but allow many patients to dispense with glasses after surgery. Multifocal lenses can also be used in clear lens extraction offering those who do not have cataract, freedom from spectacle wear too. Whatever your eye condition and lifestyle, you can be confident we will guide you through all the options to ensure you receive the most suitable lens.  You will be directed to another facility for your biometric measurements (and a pentacam scan if you are considering premium lenses) and you will need to ensure to be contact lens free for one week (soft lenses) or two weeks (hard lenses) in order to avoid a return visit.

Yag Laser

YAG Laser treatment is required in about five percent of patients who have undergone cataract surgery. The membrane, which holds the artificial lens in place, becomes cloudy and vision deteriorates. This can happen at any time but usually two to four years after the original surgery and comes on very gradually.

This treatment can be given in the clinic by Mr Horgan and only takes a few minutes. It is carried out on a special machine like a slit lamp.

Age-related Macular Degeneration

Simon is a leading clinician in AMD and is able to administer treatments such as Avastin, Eylea, Vabysmo, Ozurdex and Ongavia.  As part of their care, patients require regular OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomography) scans, which are one of the most sophisticated tools available for assessing eye health.  For your convenience we offer an OCT with a follow up consultation in the same appointments at our New Malden clinic and our Harley Street clinic. As our clinic allows us to provide the results immediately, you can be confident you'll always be on the optimum treatment plan - we can adjust it as soon as it's found to be necessary.  We also work closely with specialist Optometrists who offer OCT scans and other tests at competitive rates.  Details of Optometrists can be obtained from our office.

Aged-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in older people. It involves damage to the small area at the back of the eye called the macula giving rise to loss of central vision. Treatment is given with an injection to the eye.

Central or Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO/BRVO)

RVO is a potentially blinding condition that can occur at any age, although it usually affects those over the age of 50. Treated with laser, the latest research suggests that injection treatments such as Avastin, Eylea, Ozurdex, Vabysmo or Ongavia offer superior results. Simon has extensive experience in the management of RVOs and can advise on the most suitable therapy. In addition, we'll make sure we find the underlying cause - smoking, high blood pressure or high cholesterol are often to blame - so you can tackle this as well.

Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Although macular edema is the most common cause of loss of vision in diabetic patients, breakthrough treatments such as Avastin, Eylea, Vabysmo, Ozurdex and Ongavia do offer an improvement. A further option is offerd by Illuvien, a new treatment which is also proving highly effective. Simon has had excellent results with both treatments, and will be happy to talk you through your options.

Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a common disorder of the eyelid margins that can cause irritation, inflammation, redness and lump formation of chalazia. In most cases, however, good eyelid hygiene and regular cleansing can control it without the need to visit your GP or our team. We can now offer an additional treatment "Blephex" using an electronic device for blepharitis, demodex infestation and meibomianitis.

Glaucoma

Simon can diagnose glaucoma with the assistance of glaucoma screening offered at our Harley Street clinic or local Opticians who we recommend. Once diagnosed, he will usually prescribe eyedrops and will monitor you regularly. Laser treatment or surgical intervention may be required for some patients and these treatments are offered at our clinics.

Children

Simon is delighted to see children for many conditions including Astigmatism, Amblyopia ("lazy eye"), Strabismus and much more. Patients will often be referred to our Orthoptist for management and treatment alongside Simon.
